The Heart Of Europe - Roma Secunda
There are many places in this world so deeply rooted in history and culture, but ironically the average traveler may seldom take note of this in these fast times. This one little town in Germany we know of traces its history back to 2000 B.C. when the Assyrians established a colony there on the Moselle River.
I bet you never knew the Assyrians were even in Germany huh? Even the Celtics inhabited this region of Germany for a time, and under Augustus Caesar this little town became the capital of Gallia Belgica.
Have you guessed the name of the German city yet? The point is, sometimes we need to slow down and discover, remember and enjoy the richness that is the world we live in and travel through.
The German city is none other than Trier, a beautiful and modern city on the Mosell a hop-skip-and-a-jump from Luxembourg and other fabulous German treasures. The city of Trier was once known as the “second Rome,” and for more than five centuries was a key European political center.
Local people now joke about Trier as Germany’s largest village, even as the city now sprawls along the banks of the ancient river.
Ruins and landmarks from Roman and earlier times dot the landscape of this quaint city today, prominent reminders of the glory of Rome and rich culture of the German people.
Many have called Trier the Heart of Europe. Trier is in fact at the very heart of the Moselle wine growing region where some of the finest sparkling wines in the world are produced. Today Trier is far from being old fashioned and there is a vibrant nightlife and festivals also abound seasonally.
Trier is a great example of a modern cultural center imbued with the flavor of antiquity for those curious or thoughtful enough to encounter these gifts. From its beautiful Gothic churches and Cathedrals to the great cuisine and accommodation, Trier is truly a jewel to behold. How many of us either live or travel to such places without having known the essence of such places? Just minutes away from Luxembourg and a short drive to France or Belgium, Trier is a must see and stay destination for any traveler to Germany. History meets a new Germany, what could be more enticing?
